With the advent of Home Assistants, such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google Home devices, we are an increasingly well-connected society with instant access to volumes of knowledge and electronic controls with a mere voice command. The question for resorts and hotels is: How does IoT affect RevPAR?
The concept of ‘the guest experience’ in hospitality has significantly evolved during the past 3-5 years, mirroring changes in both demographics and technology. Today, fewer guests prefer to speak with a ‘live’ person when making hotel or restaurant reservations. They appreciate the convenience of interacting with technology versus staff. Smartphones, tablets and laptops are their closest companions throughout the day. Then there is a handful yet who want to interact with staff, but still prefer to augment that interaction with technology. These changes in demographics and technology have made all guest populations more comfortable with technology in general. This opens doors for the hospitality industry, allowing IoT to support and supplement the guest experience.
Putting IoT to Work to Drive RevPAR
When installed and monitored properly IoT can mean less downtime for rooms, and fewer issues for resorts. It allows staff to further hone IoT strategies, and if a device or service fails, that failure can often be seen in real-time, allowing staff to respond quickly. After all, a room cannot be rented if something in the room is not working. Having a meltdown of any of key device such as HVAC systems, phones or lighting, can cause enough chaos to impact RevPAR.
In modern hotels and resorts, each of these systems can be connected, and work as a single communications unit. Intelligent solutions and devices that are a part of the IoT movement have become a part the hospitality IT spend. When everything is intelligently connected so that systems and experiences can be managed cost-effectively, it helps increase RevPAR. By extension, the level of service that resorts can provide with IoT is increased, along with the level of guest confidence and comfort.
IoT applications are almost limitless. Chances are IoT technologies will soon enable virtually every scenario imaginable.
